Debbie was an average 29-year old woman in 1989 who, like plenty of other women, had gained some unwanted weight over the years. Debbie’s family had brought home a new camcorder that Christmas and she could not believe she was the one with the extra weight on the other side of that screen. She knew she had to make a change and joined her local Weight Watchers group in 1990. Her goal was to lose 40 pounds.
When Debbie started losing weight, she never thought she would be able to do it. It was recommended that she should lose 40 pounds but thought to herself that she had never even lost 10 pounds, so a goal of 40 was just too much. However, she quickly realized that she had been overeating during every meal and her portions needed to be cut.
A year later Debbie had lost 30 lbs but felt she had plateaued and wouldn’t be able to lose more weight. But in August of 1990 Debbie needed to buy a bridesmaids dress and the sales associate asked her what size she was. As always, she told the lady a size 12 would do just fine. The sales associate stared and told her that there was no way she was a size 12. As Debbie put the size 8 dress on and realized that it fit perfectly, it gave her the boost that she needed to realize her initial weight loss goal of losing 40 pounds. She lost the remaining 10 lb within a few months.
Today, Debbie is not the average 53-year old woman. She came up with an incredible idea for her weight loss journey. Do you know who Debbie Hugo is? She is the leader of the very popular Weight Watchers program in Washington now. She came up with an idea, a unique, crazy idea for her Weight Watchers club’s members to get them started on their weight loss journeys.
Debbie Hugo informed all members in her team of her great idea to help them lose weight themselves; for every pound they lost, they would bring in a pound of food to donate to a local food bank. Members were excited about this plan and quickly got started. It not only gave the participants something to be excited about, but also added some fun competition to their weight loss endeavor. In their first year, they donated 3,000 pounds of food to their local food bank; that means that her team lost a total of 3,000 pounds.
While having a meeting, the CEO of Weight Watchers came to visit to her surprise. He praised her because of the progress she and her team were making on their weight loss journey and told her that he wondered what would happen if her idea was spread nationwide. The next year, she received a call that would change her world; they were using her idea in all Weight Watchers programs under the name Lose for Good. This project resulted in over 2 million pounds of food being donated to food banks around the US, as Weight Watchers members who donated the food had lost millions of pounds. Her idea worked so well and was so inspirational that it was becoming a national program.
