Going back to work was scary for me. I didn’t have any confidence in myself as a woman going back to work. I felt like I had nothing to offer the work place because I’ve been a mom for so many years. I was caught up in taking care of my family, their needs and whatever the family as a whole together. In addition to volunteering at Mops, my church and community.
I have 3 children, their age range from 13-year-old twins to my youngest 4 almost 5 years old. My two oldest will be going into the 8th grade and my youngest will be going into Kindergarten and she’s SUPER excited! I felt the tugged of trying to decide what to do after all my kids are off in school. I thought about this for a long time but, I also felt less confident about deciding what to do because its been so long since I worked outside of the home.
So while in prayer about what to do next, I thought back to the kind of Jobs I’ve had in the past. My last Job, I worked outside of the home was a childcare provider and this was when my two oldest children started kindergarten and at the time, we needed the extra money to help with the bills and other things. So I literally just took any job that would hire me. At the time, I wasn’t confident in my abilities, I was awful at interviews and needed money. Bad combination, at the same time, I felt like this was a God-given opportunity for me because at this Job, God was dealing with my heart, I was learning more about Him, meeting different people and learning about myself. Even though (career wise) this was not something I want to do with my life or a passion of mine, but this was a God-given opportunity to grow in my faith to where I am now. I wouldn’t trade that for the world.
The lesson I learned, during that time, would be to allow God to direct you where to go. I was young in my faith, and at the time didn’t realize God was directing me, I wanted to leave the Job multiple times and just couldn’t, I felt the tug to stay and I stayed for 4 years. Pray through where God is leading you and allow God to do it because you never know the blessings that will come at the Job God is leading you to, even thought it’s not your passion or what you want to do in life.
Right now, I wanted a Job that was Part time and flexible. I looked on Indeed.com and signed up for a local temp agency in my area. I used temp agencies before and was always successful. They help you with resumes and interview as well. I was very nervous about my Interview skills as I stated above, I was horrible at interviews and it was only by the grace of God that I would get the Job. So knowing that, by word of mouth, I asked an older woman that used to volunteer for a non-profit that helped people that came out of Jail or prison looking to get back to work. Her and her husband would help with resumes and interviews, so I asked her to help me with my resume and interviews. She helped me with the interview process and I became very confident in the process now and I truly believe being confident in my current skills, God and her help, helped me get the Job I was looking for.
5 tips to get started
Decide on what you want to do.
Go back to school, volunteer, Internship etc. For me as a Military spouse, I was thinking about what Job/career can I do now that I can do, when my husband get orders to another location. I thought a lot about my pervious working experience and wrote down skills I did then and new skills I accumulated now. I thought and prayed about what to do next and for me, It was Banking. More specifically a teller. Years ago, when my 2 oldest children we’re babies, I used to work at a bank, not long, only for a couple of months. I felt like, becoming a bank teller would use all my skills I’ve gained and opportunities to advance and learn more.
Full time or Part time.
So when searching for your next Job career, my first decision would be to decide whether to do full-time or part-time. I wanted to do part-time because I’m just getting back into the work force and didn’t want to go in full force. my daughter is starting school and want to be there for her as she eases into it school. I would like to work part-time for a whole year and see how it would work for my family after that than decide on Full time.
Gather resources to help in Job search.
When looking for a Job check the more effective way to help find your dream career in your area. Resources such as Temp agencies, Job posting websites for your particular area, word of mouth, Job Fairs etc. Also, If you just graduated from college (Like me), talk with your teachers about Job opportunities or your career counselor can direct you to the right location in looking for a Job.
Give your family a heads up.
Of course talk with your spouse to see if this is even possible for your family, because your going to need their help. Discuss childcare, see if this is possible, such as after school programs in your area. As a military spouse there’s always a Military family Liaison that can also direct you to the right program for your family and give you tips on what to do. Let your family in on the process of the Interview, on finding the Job and the ups and downs of looking for a Job. My kids loved to be in on the process, there we’re always so positive about everything and looked forward to talking with me about it. Great bonding family opportunity.
I started before my kids started school because I felt like finding a Job would have taken some time. I didn’t think, I would find a Job so fast. I saw a lot of opportunities for finding a banking Job but it wasn’t right for me and my family. There was a Job posting that was for a part-time bank teller that would “float” (travel from different branches everyday) from one branch to another. I did not like that, even though it paid the most. It didn’t fit with my plans and my current family situation. Be patient in the process, remember God will direct you to the career opportunity He has for you.
7+ tips to keep in mind when choosing a career
Here are a fews tips to keep in mind. I want to write these tips and show my process in finding a career and getting started with the career of my choice. A few factors I had to consider. I didn’t work for over 5+ years in the workforce, I was blogging on and off during this time, I went to school and finished my Bachelor’s degree in business management but still had no idea what I wanted to do even after I graduated. I am an Entrepreneur at heart and had to change my mindset about getting a Job. I’ve been involved in different things (Business wise) while at home with my children and felt the need to get out of the house and get back to the workforce.
Every-time I thought about finding a Job I would be nervous because I didn’t feel confident in my skills and abilities. I was in college when I met my husband and then got pregnant, I didn’t get a chance to finish college or a chance to even know what I want to do in life. So Kids was first for me, before finding the career and staying home, I’m doing it different than most people. Most people after high school, go to college, find the career they want, work for a few years and then have children and stay home after realizing that working in the workforce was not for them.
For me, After high school, I just started college, got pregnant, stayed home for a few years with my two oldest, got a Job (I wasn’t passionate about) that would hire me, worked a few years, build a few businesses and then got pregnant again and now 5+ years later, I’m in the workforce. I know this is not for long term, this is only for a season. These are a few of the tips I used to help me in the process of finding my career.
- Be prayerful
- Exposure yourself and try different things
- Surround yourself with supportive & positive people
- Create a routine in the home & business
- Build small and long term goals
- Be yourself
- Don’t be afraid to fail
- Ask yourself questions:
- What are your options? (ex: childcare, job market in your area, how far are you willing to travel?, etc.)
- Do you want a career (Something you build) or job (Something that is temporary to bring in money)
- Do you want to build your business or be an entrepreneur
- Enjoy the Process of growing
