As a parent teaching my kids about Jesus, the bible and God can be overwhelming. Not knowing ways and even resources to help get us started. I”m here to show you easy steps to get started and some resources that will help in your process in teaching your children the way they should go and when they grow old they will depart (Proverbs 22:6).
7 Ways to develop the love for God in your children
Be an example
The greatest way you can help develop the LOVE for God is to be an example. Kids will pick up behaviors from us as parents and not even know. My daughter (I MUST confess) has “caught” my not so good attitude, I see myself in her everyday and this is a reminder for me to model better behavior.
Allowing your children to see you studying the word of God, Praying for each other and other people, giving them the opportunity to see how God work things out in your life, showing them how God provides and the lists goes on.
Talk about God’s word early in age
Going to church and sending them to Sunday School is a great start, Which is how I started, Eventually, I began to received resources that I found helpful in training up my kids in the way they should go (Proverbs 22:6). Sometimes finding books that make reading God’s word fun and memorizing Scripture excited instead of dreading, making it something they have to do instead of the JOY of finding God in it.
Talk about Jesus in your conversations (1 peter 3:8-9)
In 1 peter 3:8-9 the Message version talk about being a blessing to others, let there be no sarcasm, no retaliation, be sympathetic, loving and compassionate, this is consistently a reminder in my household. The kids behavior towards each other is a great way to incorporate scripture to help encourage and help train them up in the way they should go.
Establish the word of God in them
Talk about Scripture, making it real, my last example is one way to help make the scriptures real in them but also listening to Worship songs about God, also can make it real for them. Here’s a resource you can try.
Give them a bible and make it a big deal
My teenagers have a fun, comic bible and my youngest has a preschool bible with biblical cartoon characters I thought we’re SUPER cute and fun. She received this bible from my church preschool for graduating and going to kindergarten.
Any reason for Cake & Ice Cream and for the kids, just for getting a bible is fun for them. They LOVE it! It’s a family celebration and it’s part of making memories that they will remember when they are Old.
Make memorizing scriptures fun
Having fun Memorizing scriptures with music, being an example and make the bible stories fun can help with memorizing scriptures for the kids. I shared with you how I do devotional with my kids and how I establish the word in them.
I want to end this post by saying these examples is from trial and error from what I saw worked and what didn’t work with my kids and even family. I try not to make it a “religious act” but an opportunity to have fun with my kids and turning it into an opportunity to share with them what I LOVE which is the Word of God and my passion to teaching them about the word of God.
