I’ve always thought the Sabbath was a “rest day” for all Christians. A day set aside for God after working hard all six days and then you rest on the 7th day, just like in Genesis 2:2-3 “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” this is my understanding.
I recently had the opportunity to get more of an understanding about the Sabbath from reading the book: “Take the day off, receiving God’s gift of rest.” By: Robert Morris. In this book, he gives examples of how he came to the understanding of how serious taking a rest day of Sabbath is. At first, I thought it was a little more of a strict concept, that it had to be about God in everything on that rest day, Music, television, study, reading the word, etc. But Robert dispells that concept and it more about enjoying God and not about legalism.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Rest your mind, body, and spirit and focus on God’s principles for rest with this helpful guide from bestselling author Robert Morris.
A constant stream of busyness can slowly wear away at us over time: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Yet believers often forget that taking a day of rest is one of the Ten Commandments!
When we don’t give our minds and emotions a break, our will to make good choices can often become compromised. Resting is also important to those around you. If you have a weary soul, you can’t pour yourself into others at home, work, or wherever you are. It’s vital-you must take the day off.
In Take the Day Off, Pastor Morris explains why rest is central to your wellbeing, how to do it, and how helpful it can be. You will be inspired to experience true rest and make it a priority in the rhythm of your weekly schedule. Don’t wait and delay God’s blessings in your life. Start implementing the principle of rest in your life and you will see eternal benefits.
My favorite quote from the book: “By the time Jesus came on the scene, honoring the Sabbath day had become almost completely focused on outward actions and not at all on inward devotion, Joy, or delight. Yes, Delight! (Isaiah 58:13). The fact is, drawing lines between what is “secular and what is “Scared” is artificial. For the believer, everything is scared. The earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof. What sanctifies an activity is what’s going inside you as you’re doing it, even playing golf.”
